Level Up- The Launch to Roots and Wings

Roots and Wings has finally launched! Through extensive planning and with the goal of launching in 2025, we started our cohort programs, Roots and Wings, in January. These programs will last for periods of 7-8 weeks, consisting of roughly 20 teens getting hands-on experience with the program content, supported by mentors. We kicked off these programs with Roots and Wings: Level Up.

Over the course of the program, teens engaged in a mix of hands-on learning, creative exploration, and collaborative problem-solving. The program introduced foundational concepts in robotics, coding, and emerging technologies like virtual and augmented reality—all while building confidence and community.

Early in the program, teens explored the idea that robots, AI—and even humans—follow programming to solve problems and complete tasks. Through a series of interactive challenges, they learned how to break down problems step by step, shift their mental approach, and tackle tasks with fresh perspectives.

As their understanding grew, teens applied their coding skills by programming robots to navigate obstacle courses. They practiced refining commands, troubleshooting errors, and improving performance over time. Towards the end of the program, many worked together to design a space themed mini city for the robots to explore. Progress was marked not just by faster obstacle course times, but by the growing confidence and determination on display.

In addition to robotics, the program included an immersive exploration of virtual and augmented reality. Teens stepped into virtual environments that allowed them to explore historical landmarks, distant planets, and imaginative new worlds. Using tools like Merge Cubes, they experienced augmented reality first hand—turning everyday surroundings into interactive experiences and learning how these technologies might shape the future.

It was incredible to witness teens supported by caring adults, forming new friendships, expressing creativity, and embracing challenging activities with enthusiasm. The group showed remarkable growth in both technical skills and personal confidence, making this first program a powerful launching point for understanding how impactful these programs can be.
